Review of 17A & 96 As Applicable to Kitchen Systems

This course has been designed to help attendees understand the basics of commercial kitchen fire suppression systems included in NFPA-17A. Participants will be introduced to the basics of inspection, maintenance, and testing requirements and learn minimum detection locations and that of other devices per NFPA-17A.  For hoods, the participant will review the basic construction and types and how these affect the design and installation of kitchen fire suppression systems, and what constitutes an acceptable hood design and installation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the basics of kitchen fire suppression systems from NFPA-17A
  • Understand basic inspection, maintenance, and testing requirements in NFPA-17A
  • Learn minimum detection locations and that of other devices per NFPA-17A
  • Understand the basics of vent hood construction as it pertains to fire systems
  • Understand ducts, types, and approved hood penetrations
  • Understand appliance placement and protection
