COURSE Description:
This interactive discussion class utilizes information from multiple industry sources, Georgia Statutes, and Georgia Administrative Codes to provide updated information on current industry standards and trends.
Through the use of case studies, videos, and manufacturer-provided technical documentation, students will receive instruction on updates to NFPA standards, legislative changes, training availability, information used in the servicing and installation of portable fire extinguishers and pre-engineered systems.
This discussion module will consist of a review of the following information:
- Key terms related to fire behavior
- Types of portable fire extinguishers, their operation, and the importance of matching extinguishers to hazards
- Pre-engineered systems, their operation, and the importance of matching system design to hazards
- Overview of chemical processes related to fire suppression
- Fire extinguisher and pre-engineered system design
- Extinguisher reliability and design safety
- Health and operational safety considerations
- UL 300 testing
- Placarding requirements
- Review of manufacturer-provided data
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this class, the student will:
- Have increased knowledge of types of portable fire extinguishers, their operation, and the importance of matching extinguishers to hazards
- Have increased knowledge on the layout of pre-engineered systems, their operation, and the importance of matching extinguishers to hazards
- Understand the concept of the fire triangle/tetrahedron, it’s relation to fire chemistry, and the applicability to the selection and use of fire extinguishers
- Understand the concept of the fire triangle/tetrahedron, it’s relation to fire chemistry, and the applicability to the layout and installation of pre-engineered systems
- Have a basic understanding of extinguisher and pre-engineered system design, reliability, and safety
- Have an understanding of extinguishing agents, testing criteria, and the applicability of UL300 testing
- Understand health and operational safety considerations in the use and selection of extinguishers and extinguishing agents
