Course Description:

Description:  Discuss the requirements pf NFPA 241 as they apply to safeguards for construction, alteration, and demolition operations to provide reasonable safety to life and property from fire during such operations. Participants will learn about key factors including, pre-incident planning, site security, development of a fire prevention program and the requirements for temporary and permanent standpipes and fire pumps

Audience: Fire protection contractors, AHJs, Facility management, building engineers, Insurance professionals, General Contractors, and project managers

Learning Objectives: at the conclusion of this program, participants will understand and be able to prepare a comprehensive Fire and Loss Prevention Program to include:

• Development of a pre-incident plan in accordance with NFPA 1620
• Site emergency communication procedures
• Site personnel responsibilities during an incident
• Signage for site address(es) and building identification acceptable to the AHJ
• Site hot work operations
• Fire protection systems, as follows:
• For construction operations, installation of new fire protection systems as construction progresses
• For alteration operations, preservation of existing fire protection systems during alteration
• For demolition operations, preservation of existing fire protection systems during demolition
• Procedures for reporting specific emergency incident location to first responders
• Emergency evacuation procedures for site personnel
• Good housekeeping practices
• Waste disposal
• On-site security
• Protection of existing structures and equipment from exposure fires
• Documentation for applicable project fire-related inspections, tests, training, and drills, as required
• A life safety plan that emphasizes the need to alert personnel of emergencies and provide clear egress paths to safety
• Ensure lighting and markings are provided to enable safe personnel travel
• Temporary utilities, including a safety plan for gas supplies on site in accordance with NFPA 55 and NFPA 58
• Verification that direct-fired heaters used for drying and temporary heat do not discharge unsafe levels of carbon monoxide
• Periodic leak checks and condition checks for temporary piping and hoses used for distribution of fuels
• Periodic review and verification of temporary bonding and grounding of electrical systems
